Singapore-born Eurasian, Geraldine Schubert currently divides her time among her consuming passions of visual art, performance and education. She explores her affinity for nature, female issues and notions of self through painting, sculpture, theatre, performance art, poetry and prose writing, busking and jewellery design. In 2015 she received one of the region's most coveted art prizes, the UOB Painting of the Year Award in the Established Artist Category for her artwork, Crossing Bridges. Instilling an artistic consciousness in the masses is a strong desire of hers. To that end, she runs art workshops and has volunteered as a docent at the Singapore Art Museum. A deep believer in the creative spirit, Geraldine hopes to inspire others to explore their creative potential. Collectors include UOB, Dr Pwee Keng Hock (co-founder of Utterly Art) and His Excellency Eduardo Ramos-Gomez (Ambassador of Mexico). Artist Statement As an artist, I strive to look at the mundane and the familiar from a brand new perspective and enable others to look at common things in a different way. By isolating a simple subject and removing it from its context, I hope to 'defamiliarise' it, making it possible to engage it in a separate space and see the sustaining dignity and beauty in the most humdrum and ordinary. I draw inspiration from everywhere: nature, people, architecture, literature, music, technology, current affairs, television... Everything is connected. Presently, I am spellbound by construction sites and the MRT. My technique is representational that is, it comprises images recognisable to the human eye. I think it is important for viewers to be able to recognise the images in my work. It is one way to draw them into a dialogue with my art. If my artwork is too far removed from the viewers' vocabulary, it may become daunting for them to even approach it. And if it cannot engage viewers, it becomes self-indulgent. In my opinion, this is pointless because art is such a powerful medium of communication. I choose to create artwork from ideas that sustain my interest and possibly arouse the interest of others. I am always searching for ways to inspire hope and spread beauty. My art is an expression of this search. I am the sea, always searching for its shore, always restarting. "La mer! La mer! Toujours recommencee! The sea! The sea! Forever restarting." - Iris Murdoch, The Sea For enquiries on works for sale or to get in touch, email [email protected] or call/text +65 90254760 |
